About

About Goodstoney First Nation

Goodstoney First Nation is a Stoney Nakoda Treaty 7 Nation based at Mînî Thnî, west of Calgary, Alberta.

Goodstoney First Nation is one of the three Stoney Nakoda Nations. The three Nations share the same culture, values and traditions. The community is based at Mînî Thnî (formerly Morley), west of Calgary. Members speak Stoney Nakoda, a language in the Sioux-Assiniboine language family.

In September 1877, Chief Jacob Goodstoney signed Treaty 7 for what was then called Jacob's Band. The band was later renamed Wesley, after Chief Peter Wesley. After a long journey, including a 1992 vote, members brought back the Goodstoney name to honour the Nation's history. In 1947, about 5,000 acres on the Kootenay Plains became Goodstoney land. Goodstoney people had traditionally camped and hunted there.

Culture is part of community life throughout the year. Nakoda pow-wows are held every year at the Chief Goodstoney Rodeo Centre. Indian relay horse races there honour a warrior tradition. The Nation is also working on its future through projects such as:

  • Goodstoney Meadows, a shopping development along Highway 1 meant to create jobs for members
  • Taking back control of child and family services under federal Bill C-92
  • Shared Stoney programs, including addiction treatment services

You can learn more on the Nation's official website.
